Message from the International Student Concerns Chair:

My name is Gautham Pandiyan and I am a PhD student in the Molecular Cancer Biology program at Duke University in Durham, NC. I was born in Chennai, India and have also lived in Nottingham, England for a few years. I attended college at The University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia and was very involved in international student life. In my years in college and graduate school I have served in many student leadership capacities, attended conferences, made presentations, served as an orientation leader, created programming, and served on university committees related to international student life. Apart from this I have also been involved in graduate student council leadership roles and several other cultural and social student groups.

I am excited to announce some of the goals I have for the ISCC this year:
1) Establish contact and communication with all the regional ISCC reps and build a strong network
2) Use this network to solicit opinion on what issues ISCC should work on in the future
3) Use this network to also determine what best practices regarding international students at different schools are and to put these up on a website
4) To lobby for creation of new visa classes that would allow more flexibility to international students to work and stay in the USA during Legislative Action Day and at other times (see Foreign Student Retainment Talking Points.pdf from LAD in Feb. 2007)
5) To establish relations with the following parties and to work on issues related to international students and discern information concerning us:
a) Dr. Daniel Denecke, Council of Graduate Schools
b) National Association of International Educators (NAFSA)
c) Other International Education organizations in the USA

So what are your roles? You form an integral part of the network described above that will allow us to assess international student concerns and share best practices. If you are interested in helping us with our goals and efforts this year, or would like to give us some feedback please email me at: Iscc@nagps.org

We look forward to hearing from you.
